A Gastador in the GFair Space!

Event highlights that made me go from Creative Writer to Consumer during the event day

Creating a marketplace event is never just about putting booths together and calling it a bazaar, it’s about building a space with purpose. The challenge was to elevate the usual marketplace experience into something more meaningful —- a space that champions local Filipino businesses, celebrates trade, and creates real opportunities for growth and connection, all driven by the Globe Business overarching theme of Malasakit.

At the heart of it all was a simple but powerful insight: “MSMEs largely benefit from business expos and marketplace events because they are exposed to other businesses, tools, and services that they can utilize to innovate, improve, and upscale their own ventures.” More than just selling products, these events become ecosystems of trade, collaboration, and possibility shared through a common passion for showing what it really means to Love Local.

With that in mind, the goal was to design an experience that felt less like a typical bazaar and more like a movement — one that championed the excellence, creativity, and resilience of local entrepreneurs. As the Creative Lead, I set out to shape every touchpoint with intention: from the overall concept down to the smallest details that would make both merchants and guests feel part of something bigger. That they’re not only trading goods and services and making sales, but trading stories of interests, niche, and perspectives.

Ironically, somewhere between curating the experience and bringing it to life, I found myself shifting perspective as well — from being the lead behind the event to becoming one of its biggest consumers. (my bank account can attest to this!)

Here are the things we created that made me realize just how exceptional Filipino local businesses truly are:

Authentic Local Artistry at its Finest.

There’s really something about Filipino visual art and branding that not only makes it Creative, but sentimental in a way. I found myself taking photos of fine arts merchants both to keep as an inspiration and to purchase for later!

Filipino munchies done right.

Who’d have thought that we could have powdered hot sauce, have ice cream that literally tastes like unique Filipino flavors, or be OBSESSED with kamote chips? Definitely not me! The amount of snacks I purchased, and people I budol-ed to buying kamote chips were definitely a pleasant surprise that I will never forget.

Fashion that saves the future.

We can all agree that clothing from recycled materials is not new, nor groundbreaking. But done with a local flair, I can swear the pieces I saw really had me contemplating just another purchase from the marketplace!

Priceless chit-chat sessions that trump usual transactions.

And as cheesy as it may sound, the best find that I discovered while browsing the bazaar during my wee hours were the conversations I had with the merchants — each with their own story to tell and how each item in their merchandise carries their narrative, as they go to their forever homes after that day.

Now looking back, what started as a creative challenge to reimagine a marketplace event became something far more personal. I came in focused on building an experience that would champion local businesses, but I left with a really cute shirt, snacks and goodies, saved contacts, and a deeper appreciation for the passion behind every booth.

It reminded me that the true success of a marketplace isn’t measured by foot traffic alone, but by the stories exchanged, the communities strengthened, and the genuine support given to businesses that deserve to thrive. Somewhere between being the Creative Lead and becoming a loyal customer, I realized that when local Filipino businesses are given the right platform, they don’t just sell — they inspire, connect, and leave a lasting mark.
